If you have a large bedroom, you’re one of the lucky ones. Most of us have bedrooms that are on the smaller side, and if you live in a newly built apartment, the bedrooms tend to be tiny!
So what do we really need in our bedrooms?
Here are some essentials I think every bedroom needs, and if your bedroom is small, keep to these few items and it will give the illusion that your bedroom is bigger than it actually is.
The bed:
The bed is focal point of your bedroom and the most important piece of furniture.
The size of your bed will be determined by the size of your bedroom. A queen sized bed can easily fit two people, but, make sure you double check your bedroom measurements before a final purchase. A double bed maybe a better option if your bedroom is really small. It’s essential to have enough space around the bed for easy movement. You may need to get up and make your way to the bathroom in the dark!
The next most important piece of furniture after the bedframe is the mattress. You need to pay careful attention to your mattress, especially if you have back issues. A good quality, comfortable one may be expensive, but worth it, do your research on which mattress is best for you and your partner, here are some tips on selecting a mattress .
Everyone should have a good mattress, we spend about 1/3 of our lives sleeping, so ensure it’s a comfy one.
The bed is the biggest and most prominent piece of furniture in your bedroom, so it goes without saying that your bedlinen will create the style and feel of the room. Bedding is so important to your sleep quality and feel of your bedroom, the style of your bedroom can be changed by this simple yet important element.
We tend to spend less money on sheets and duvet covers than we do on an item of clothing, yet we spend so much more time in bed! We need to take care of yourselves and this means the quality of our sleep!
Buy the best bedlinen you can afford and ensure it is soft and breathable. A high thread count is not always best, the tight weave can mean the air is trapped and you may feel hot and sweaty. The experts say a thread count between 200-400 is best for bedlinen.
Bed side tables:
Having a side table or nightstand not only makes your room look stylish, it's also functional because it allows you to place your most important items beside your bed. It is also essential to have storage next to your bed if your bedroom lacks wardrobe space. Clutter can be packed away to keep your surfaces clear. This will not only make cleaning your bedroom easier, but also make your bedroom a more peaceful place to come to at the end of a busy day.
Your wardrobe:
This is an essential piece; it is important to store your clothing and shoes. Having your clothing and shoes laying around the bedroom will make the room look messy and defeat the objective in making your bedroom a sleep haven.
A cupboard with storage right up to the ceiling is best to get the most out of the space.
If it’s a modern wardrobe it usually has efficient storage options and uses the wall space well.
Older wardrobes tend to have less storage space and can be bulky.
Lighting:
Ceiling lights are important to give your bedroom general lighting, but vital to any bedroom is accent lighting.
Reading lamps are essential for reading and create a warm ambience, as well as a practical purpose of being close to you when you're in bed.
Pendant lights are not often seen in bedrooms, but if you want to mix things up, they can boost your bedroom style. Hanging pendant lights on either side of the bed frees up precious space on your bedside tables and contributes to the style and function of the room. If you have limited space on your bedside table a standing lamp can be also be used.
These 4 items are essentials to any bedroom and will create a sanctuary that is not only comfortable but also practical.
If your bedroom has the space add a few extra pieces; a bench or ottoman at the end of the bed is a great addition.
Rugs are a wonderful way to add warmth and style, and plants bring the outdoors in, as well as helping with air quality in the bedroom.
So whether you are redecorating or just refreshing your bedroom, keep these ideas in mind and let me know how you get on with making your bedroom a stylish sleep sanctuary.
Sweet dreams!
